The inspiration that powered the historic collaboration amongst playwright August Wilson and director Lloyd Richards in the Yale Repertory Theatre continues to reside on at the New Haven theatre as evidenced by the gripping revival of Wilson's "The Piano Lesson" now on view now via February 19 on the venue's mainstage.
"The Piano Lesson" had its globe premiere in New Haven in 1987, marking the fourth collaboration among the playwright as well as the Rep's former artistic director, Richards, following the good results of "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom," along with the Pultizer Prize winning "Fences." "The Piano Lesson" would also go on to win the Pulitzer Prize and turn into the third Wilson play to open on Broadway. It's element of Wilson's mammoth cycle depicting African-American life in each and every decade from the twentieth century, mainly via the experiences of residents of Pittsburgh's Hill District. Six from the cycle's ten plays had their globe premieres at Yale Rep, a run that ended with all the final play in the series, "Radio Golf," in 2005, shortly just before Wilson's death. "The Piano Lesson" is Wilson's paean to the 1930's, at the height from the Excellent Migration, when hundreds of a huge number of African-Americans left the south for what they anticipated had been far greener pastures up north. As a result, there was a steady stream of targeted traffic, as families would scrape collectively enough money to join already-settled relatives in their new houses.
"The Piano Lesson" remains a single of Wilson's richest and significantly exciting works, completely captured here in director Liesl Tommy's outstanding production. As she did in last season's enthralling production of "Eclipsed," Tommy demonstrates her capability to assist her cast provide special and captivating performances even though sustaining interest and sustaining a genuine air of suspense all through. Even though Wilson's plays can contain multiple scenes of substantial, however extremely precise and accurate colloquial dialogue, Tommy makes certain that they contribute to the improvement of each character and improve, rather than hinder, the play's forward-moving dynamic.

Wilson was always adept at using dialogue to reveal the complex, often contradictory, layers of every of his characters. With "The Piano Lesson," he has created eight such characters and under Tommy's guidance, the cast leaves indelible impressions upon the audience. The performances right here seem more subtle and less blunt than within the 1987 original production, which was nonetheless stunning and brilliant in its own right. But Tommy's approach operates just fine here, introducing us slowly and convincingly towards the demons that haunt the two main characters, the brother and sister, Boy Willie and Berniece, whose ancestors have been once slaves within the south and who frequently continued to work for their former masters inside the years past Reconstruction.

The point of contention is a baby grand piano that sits in Berniece's living room, an instrument that Berniece has refused to play since the death of her husband three years earlier. The piano is the oddest sort of family heirloom: it had been traded back and forth as part of transactions involving a number of Berniece's and Boy Willie's slave ancestors, literally bearing the marks from the slave trade, for a single of their grandparents had added a set of carefully-detailed woodcarvings towards the instrument depicting moments in the family's ancestry from Africa for the United States.

Boy Willie, on a trip up from the South where he may or may not have killed a descendant on the family's former slavemasters, wants to sell the piano to purchase some land in Mississippi which he thinks will provide him with respect and a steady income. Berniece, however, wants to hold on the piano for all of its connections to the family's past as well as the struggles they endured. Not only does the piano hold family ghosts, but Boy Willie may have brought 1 of his own, the ghost of man he may have pushed down a well, which family members swear to have seen in Berniece's Pittsburgh home. Just before the play is by means of, Berniece and Boy Willie will need to grapple with their own histories, and Boy Willie will have to face his anger and resentments.

Tommy has assembled an outstanding cast that infuses the work with humanity and passion, especially LeRoy McClain's stubborn and impatient Boy Willie. Whether he's dreaming of new angles or pacing in exasperation, McClain's Boy Willie demands watching, always tightly coiled yet ready to rage over years of frustration. This is not a blustery performance, as was the original Boy Willie, the masterful Charles S. Dutton, but more tiger-like within the way a formidable force can sneak up on you. Eisa Davis, who also created the original music for this production, initially comes across as quiet, poised and determined, with all the full capacity of her ferocity slowly revealing itself as the play progresses. The actress can convey a natural gentleness in dealing with her daughter and also the wise uncle with whom she lives, and reveals a warm, yearning side in a humorous, nearly heart-breaking scene with the na??ve young man who has accompanied her brother on this trip.

Keith Randolph Smith tends to make a lasting impression as Doaker, Berniece's railroading uncle who often serves as the play's voice of reason. His Doaker is 1 of the community's strong men who are looked to with respect and trust by others and Smith warmly projects this honor and integrity. Charlie Hudson III is delightful as Lymon, the Southern country boy experiencing a northern city for the first time, eager with anticipation but easy to be duped by city slickers ready to pounce. Hudson projects an endearing quality, even as he's trying to learn pick-up lines or primping up within the most ill-fitting orange zoot suit.

Charles Weldon is Wining Boy, a singer-entertainer who's just returned from a long jaunt in St. Louis, who spurs the boys within the cast into singing not only some popular tunes from the day but spurring fond recollections on the some of spirituals that once nourished their days down south. Tyrone Mitchell Henderson is funny and touching as Avery, the tall, thin minister-to-be, who's been courting Berniece and has been the subject of some generally good-natured ridicule by some of her relatives. Joniece Abbott-Pratt acquits herself quite well in her two short scenes as a young Hill District party girl looking for a good time, whilst Malenky Welsh, who charmed us earlier this season within the planet premiere of "Bossa Nova" at Yale Rep, is sweet and charismatic as Berniece's daughter.

Dede M. Ayite's well-conceived set depicts the two main rooms of Berniece's home, parlor and kitchen, with a long, tall staircase for the unseen bedrooms dominating the rear on the stage, against a backdrop in the streets on the Hill District, circa 1936. Jennifer Salim's costumes offer a remarkable contrasts in style, from the practical working class clothes of Berniece and her uncle, the field garb of Boy Willie and pal Lymon, the fanciful suits on the aging crooner Wining Boy, the near-pretentious garb of preacher Avery, and pseudo-nightlife wear of Grace and Lymon (that orange suit). Alan C. Edwards' lighting accommodates pre-dawn philosophizing, late night partying and middle on the night terrors, saving up some surprises for the climactic battle against demons real and imagined. Junghoon Pi's sound design makes us aware of the busy community just outside the home, when the Hill was a community in its cultural and social prime.
It's good to see August Wilson fitting in nice and comfortably in his former home at Yale Rep. This production of "The Piano Lesson" is a great way to get introduced or re-introduced to the work of a man who will be remembered as one particular of this country's most interesting and valued playwrights. This may encourage Yale Rep to bring those few operates by Wilson that did not initially premiere here to New Haven to help give us a fuller picture of this playwright's output. Incidentally, Hartford Stage does plan to stage Wilson's "Gem on the Ocean" later this season, which takes place inside the first decade in the Twentieth Century.

For more information about and to order tickets for "The Piano Lesson," call 203.432.1234 or visit The run concludes on February 19.

As an expert Piano Teacher, parents usually ask me what age is the ideal age to begin piano lessons. Since all young children have various abilities and skills, the perfect age to start private piano lessons is determined by the individual kid.
You will find three categories to consider when determining if your child is ready for piano lessons: academic abilities, emotional maturity, and all-natural musical abilities.
What many parents do not realize is how complex reading music might be. Piano students not just ought to know the alphabet from A to G, however they also ought to know those seven letters in reverse - G, F, E, D, C, B, A.
As an example, the song "Mary Had just a little Lamb" begins together with the notes E, D, C. In order to get a student to play that song, they have to know the alphabet in reverse order from E to C. In case your youngster hasn't mastered the alphabet forwards, carrying out the alphabet in reverse can be very confusing.
Addition and subtraction are important abilities used in music. Music is divided into small sections referred to as measures. Each and every measure has the identical variety of beats. Students must initial memorize the number of beats each type of note gets (a quarter note is worth one particular beat, a dotted half note is worth 3 beats.) Then the student must make sure every measure has the appropriate variety of beats by adding the distinct note values with each other. If your child can't do simple math such as 1 + 3 = 4, or 4 - 2 = 2, then they may have difficulty in terms of counting.
Most piano teachers will have the child's assignment written down in an assignment book. If your child can not read, it is going to be your duty to sit together with the youngster throughout their everyday practice sessions. It really is crucial to make confident your youngster is following all of the instructions properly. In case you are not prepared, or able, to devote that much time for piano lessons, you need to wait until your child is old adequate to read the assignment notes and practice on their own.
Emotional maturity is necessary due to the fact studying an instrument requires plenty of patience, concentration and repetition. In case your kid includes a brief attention span, is unwilling to accept constructive criticism, gets simply frustrated or bored, or is unable to behave throughout the half hour lesson, then they are not prepared for private piano lessons.
Some young children will have organic musical skills that turn into apparent early in their lives. You are going to locate these youngsters will dance and clap once they hear music. They're going to sing songs utilizing the correct pitches. They'll naturally be drawn to instruments and try to make music that's pleasing towards the ear. Usually these youngsters may have a a lot easier time finding out the best way to play the piano. They would possibly benefit from beginning piano lessons at a younger age of five to six years old.
I have located that the typical kid is prepared to commence private piano lessons at age seven or eight years old. The Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) website provides this recommendation, "Formal music lessons can start when students are officially starting formal school, typically very first grade."
Some piano teachers specialize in younger ages. They will have particular education and methods for teaching younger kids which use finger numbers instead of letters. They normally spend considerably on the lesson time away from the piano playing games and undertaking floor activities. When deciding on a piano teacher, be sure you ask what age the teacher specializes in.
If cash is an problem, think about the fact that most eight-year-old students understand in two months what a five or six-year-old learns in two years. Beginning your child at an older age can undoubtedly save you a great deal of income in lesson costs and supplies.
Even when your child isn't prepared for formal piano lessons, you will find other musical possibilities available for your kid. Many Community Education applications offer you group music appreciation classes. The Music Teachers National Association recommends that 5-6 year olds enroll in applications that "introduce your youngster towards the instrument, but also involve movement, rhythm activities, singing and more."

One in the (a lot of?) outstanding functions on the Beaux Arts Trio, of which Menahem Pressler was founding member and pianist, was the in depth breadth of repertoire. Now that the trio has disbanded, Pressler has entered a brand new phase of his profession in which he continues to enjoy the diversity of repertoire by other signifies. Those indicates contain an annual one-week residency in the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, exactly where he provides a public Master Class and works with each faculty and students to prepare a program within the Chamber Music Masters series. That is the week within the Conservatory academic year for Pressler's pay a visit to, and his recital took place last evening inside the Caroline H. Hume Concert Hall.
The diversity covered reasonably familiar functions from the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth century. The one weakness occurred at the beginning on the evening using the eighteenth-century offering, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's second piano quartet in E-flat key, K. 493. Getting had the chance to observe Pressler in both a wide variety of recitals and numerous years' worth of Conservatory events, including several from the Master Classes, I have come for the conclusion that the eighteenth century is his least comfy element. Last February I was even bold sufficient to suggest that he may have missed the point of a Joseph Haydn piano trio he was coaching in the Conservatory. The issue then surfaced once again last night and essentially involved giving too much priority to the piano.
The outcome was the kind of discontinuity that is certainly far more evident in chamber music than in an orchestral setting. We had a string trio of students, among whom there had been rich channels of communication along with a keen sense of balance (even when the violin was somewhat on the weak side); and then there was Pressler at the piano. For all of visual signs of attentiveness, it felt as if he was playing inside a globe aside from the students. As a result, the quartet fractured into a trio and a piano solo; along with the spirit in the intimate conversations of chamber music was lost.
As soon as the program moved on from the eighteenth century, Pressler seemed to become on far more secure ground; and it might also be that he was a lot more comfortable performing with faculty members. The Mozart quartet was followed by Claude Debussy's 1915 cello sonata with cellist Jean-Michel Fonteneau. This previous September the prodigious fifteen-year-old Tessa Seymour performed this sonata inside a Noontime Concerts™ recital at Old St. Mary's Cathedral; and she happens to be one particular of Fonteneau's students. Last evening thus offered an opportunity to compare her voice with that of her teacher. This particular sonata provides an excellent point of comparison, since it is each highly cerebral and intensely emotional. It was the one particular portion of Seymour's recital in which I saw a spontaneous physical gesture interrupt her highly focused concentration. Fonteneau's gestures have been much much more under control, resulting within a somewhat higher level of precision that facilitates listening to a composition in which even the slightest from the auxiliary notes contribute towards the expressiveness of the whole. In this respect Pressler was an idea partner, bringing that same sense of both the entirety as well as the richness of every detail to complement Fonteneau's conception in the solo voice. As a student, Seymour is clearly in good hands with Fonteneau. As the master, Fonteneau has a lot to offer to not only his students but those of us who can only appreciate him in the audience side in the hall.
Following the intermission, the plan reverted to the nineteenth century as well as a composer for which Pressler has always had great affinity, Antonín Dvorák. The work offered was his Opus 87 piano quartet in E-flat major, which Pressler performed with violinist Axel Strauss, violist Paul Hersh, and cellist Michelle Kwon. Kwon was the only student member from the ensemble; but she is already building up an impressive resume of professional appearances (one particular of which will be tonight with all the Picasso Quartet). Thus, while she may possibly have been the "junior member" of the team, she was definitely holding her own in a conversation amongst equals. This was particularly important since the nineteenth-century tradition of highlighting the slow movement with a wealthy cello passage was clearly operative in this particular composition; and Kwon has cultivated an impressive track record of performances of such passages. Most important, however, was that the entire ensemble was united in an integrated approach for the journey through the four movements of this quartet, in the opening Allegro con fuoco gesture (with particular emphasis around the "fuoco") to the three massive forzando chords that close off the Finale. This highlighted each the energetic and introspective sides of Dvorák's character with stimulating effect, leaving any weaknesses inside the eighteenth century as a distant memory at the end from the evening.
